Very rare modernist cabinet, designed by Willem Penaat in 1925 for Metz & Co Netherlands. Metz & Co was the leader in the Netherlands in the field of home furnishings and modern design. They worked with great designers like Gerrit Rietveld, Elmar Berkovich, Bart van der Leck etc. Willem Penaat was working for Metz & Co from 1923 till 1950 and was responsible for the creative aesthetic aspects of the furniture. This cabinet is fully made of lacquered wood. It has 2 hinged doors at the bottom and 2 shelves above. Most likely the interior has been repainted a long time ago in its original off white/ cream colour, which has been yellowed a bit over time. The sides and top are recently professionally repainted in matte very dark charcoal/black like it was originally. Not many of these cabinets were made and even fewer have survided. Very hard to find. Great piece of early Dutch modernism. The cabinet is in good condition. The keys of the doors are not with it, but can be used easily.
