"semnan ghoum persian rug circa 1960.217x135 cm" this lovely rug comes from iran (formerly persia) and as a persian rug it probably enjoys the highest reputation among all types of hand-knotted rugs. Persian rugs are usually named after their region of origin. So, here, there is a semnan carpet, close to the town of ghoum. You will notice its patterns identical to the ghoum rugs, so-called boteh patterns gracefully represented in garlands. It is said that the original persian droplet design - the boteh or buta - was a representation of a floral spray combined with a cypress tree, a symbol of life and eternity. The seed-like shape is also believed to represent fertility and has connections to hinduism. Dimensions: 217x135 cm condition: good, frayed fringes.
