French black patinated pedestal with lived-in patina – circa 1880
A tall French wooden pedestal from the late 19th century with a beautifully weathered black patina. The combination of the square top, the turned central column and the stepped square base gives the piece a calm, architectural presence. Over time the black finish has become softer and more matt; local wear, small knocks, scratches and rubbed-through areas create a lovely layered surface. At 109 cm high, it is a particularly useful size for displaying a sculpture, ceramic vase, lamp, plant pot or a simple branch. The pedestal adds height and focus without taking up much floor space. Even without an object on top, the pedestal has enough sculptural strength to stand on its own in a room. The sober vertical form and ebonised finish relate to the French Aesthetic Movement, yet feel surprisingly contemporary. Suits a classic French, modern, minimalist, eclectic or wabi-sabi interior; lovely beside an armchair, in an entrance or against a lime-washed wall. Good antique condition with signs of use consistent with age and use. Wear, rubbing, minor damage and irregularities that form part of the authentic patina.
