Unknown uruguayan portraitist of the 20th century -- “untitled (portrait of a man with blue shadow)” -- c.1936 -- charcoal and gouache on newspaper -- signed ‘silva’ bottom right -- 442 × 296 mm|17 3/8 × 11 5/8 in -- 550 × 395 mm|21 5/8 × 15 1/2 in (framed size) ---- a delightful portrait (one of a pair) with hints of the rage for cubism and primitivism sweeping the world at the time it was probably made. This — the male half of the couple — has the added attraction of a bold blue shadow masking the right-hand side of the face. Composition date is inferred from dates printed within the newspaper text, but could be later; however, both the style of the drawing, and the means by which these works were acquired, strongly suggests that they have been stored, untouched and undisplayed, for a very long time. ---- note: framed images are visualisations. Framing can be arranged in a style similar to this on purchase. Alternatively, the piece can be supplied unframed (see second image) at a lower price. ---- if you wish to purchase more than one work, shipping costs can be signficantly reduced.
