Period: c. 1890-1910. This rare wall shelf with an integrated frame features clean lines, typical of the early Art Nouveau style promoted by designers like Gustave Serrurier-Bovy. It is made of medium-dark stained oak. The overall shape of the frame is slightly curved upwards. This shape is also echoed in the openwork vertical supports that hold the two shelves. Two very small shelves have been added to the outer lower corners. The upper part contains a rectangular frame with a glass panel (the current image has been added for presentation purposes); it is possible that it was originally a shelf with a dressing mirror. These slightly curved lines combined with a geometric design strongly resemble the style of Gustave Serrurier-Bovy and his workshops; unfortunately, I have not been able to find the piece in any archive, so a definitive attribution is not possible. This Belgian architect and furniture designer from Liège is considered the initiator of the Art Nouveau movement. Condition: good. No structural damage. Some signs of use consistent with age. There are discreet dark round marks on the lower shelves (probably due to the placement of vases). The glass is new (it could easily be replaced with a mirror if desired). Dimensions: 68 cm high, 45 cm wide at the bottom, 36 cm wide at the top, 10 cm deep, 3 kg.
