Period: ca. 1890-1910 this rare wall shelf with incorporated frame has clean lines, which is typical of the early art nouveau style promoted by designers such as gustave serrurier-bovy. It is made of a medium-dark stained oak. The overall shape of the frame is slightly curved upwards. This shape is also repeated for the openwork vertical brackets that support the two shelves. Two very small shelves have been added to the lower outer corners. The upper part encloses a rectangular frame with a glass plate (the current image has been added for presentation purposes); it is possible that this was originally a shelf with a dressing mirror. These gently curved lines combined with a geometric design are very reminiscent of the style of gustave serrurier-bovy and his workshops; unfortunately I have not been able to locate the piece in any archives so a definitive attribution is not possible. This belgian architect and furniture designer from liège is considered the initiator of the art nouveau movement. Condition: good. No structural damage. Some signs of use consistent with age. There are discreet dark round marks on the lower shelves (probably due to the placement of the vases). The glass is new (it could easily be replaced with a mirror if desired). Dimensions: 68 cm high, 45 cm wide at the bottom, 36 cm wide at the top, 10 cm deep, 3 kg.
