Created in 1962 by designer bill curry, stemlite represented a new type of lighting, replacing the traditional lamp base and shade with an all-in-one piece featuring interchangeable modules. Now reissued by gubi, nearly half a century later, the collection, faithful to the original design, includes two table lamps, two floor lamps, and a pendant, in a palette of colors that are both contemporary and authentic. With a background in aerospace, bill curry captured the spirit of 1960s and 1970s america, from space exploration to pop trends, when he established his own studio in los angeles in 1962, design line. He imagined new standards, made possible by emerging technologies, and designed innovative, bold, and colorful lighting collections suited to a new era. The stemlite collection is inspired by flower stems, both slender and robust. The luminaire features a cast metal base, reminiscent of a tulip stem, on which is mounted a blown glass globe and a very simple cylindrical switch. Thanks to its visual coherence, the stemlite collection allows the various luminaire models to be combined in residential, collective, or commercial spaces. The organic shape of the luminaires fits equally well in bold, modern interiors as in more classic settings.
