Gilles Perain is an uncompromising artist, a spokesperson for the "ugly" who observes society and his contemporaries with pessimism. One might perhaps criticise him, in this time of crisis, for adding another layer of darkness. But at least here is a painter who has something to say, and whose discourse breaks away from the overly sentimental painting that is sometimes too prevalent on the walls of galleries.
