Oil on canvas signed L. Henry, depicting a coastal scene where the power of the sea intertwines with the activity of fishermen. In the foreground, a large fishing boat with ochre-red sails is being pulled towards the shore. Two men guide it while a third unties the rope that held it on the beach. Further away, two women gather seaweed, slipping it into their lifted skirts. This work sensitively captures the collective effort and the rhythm imposed by the movements of the sea. The waves crash into foam on the shore, bringing a strong dynamic to the composition. The light, diffuse and slightly dramatic, reflects on the choppy water and accentuates the texture of the wet sails. In the background, other sailing boats progress out to sea, their silhouettes standing out against a sky filled with heavy, almost stormy clouds. The gilded frame features a wide and elegantly patinated moulding, adorned with floral motifs and relief scrolls. Its generous profile highlights the canvas, while the warm gilding, nuanced by time, gives it a classic and authentic charm. Period: late 19th century. Overall good condition. Previous restorations and slight scuffs.
