The Sleeper of the Valley, Charles Delporte

Bronze sculpture by the Belgian painter and sculptor Charles Delporte (1928-2012). From a layered, organic form emerges a face with closed eyes. The bronze texture reflects the light, causing the sculpture to change with the hour of the day. The organic lines and the peaceful face are expressive enough to bring calm to the viewer. The sculpture bears the title of the poem by Rimbaud, in which a young soldier lies sleeping in a green valley. Only in the last line does it become clear that he will not wake up. This piece was exhibited in the Papal Palace in Avignon. Stamped and numbered 22/50.
