A rare vintage photograph of Maurice Arnoux (1895–1940), an accomplished pilot in the French Air Force and a prominent figure in aviation during the 1930s. Shot in close-up in the cockpit of his aircraft, Arnoux is photographed in his flight suit, wearing his leather helmet and aviation goggles, his gaze determinedly fixed on the horizon. The print, a black and white silver gelatin print measuring approximately 18 x 13 cm, is signed and inscribed by Maurice Arnoux in the upper right corner. This type of personal, autographed photograph is particularly rare, as Arnoux's career was tragically cut short by his death in combat in June 1940, at the very beginning of World War II. Framed with a white mat and gold trim, in a period giltwood frame (approximately 35 x 29 cm), the photograph is in good overall condition. There are a few signs of wear on the print (light creases, micro-scratches) visible in raking light, but without any major impact on the visual quality. A national hero and test pilot, Maurice Arnoux distinguished himself in numerous international air competitions (notably the Deutsch and Michelin Cups). A lieutenant colonel at the time of his death, he symbolizes the excellence of French aviation between the two world wars.
