Charles virion (1865-1946) terracotta sculpture "lying cat" proof signed on the terrace height: 11cm length: 17cm depth: 12cm very good condition, a slight chip on the edge of the terrace (see photo n°7), wear to the patina *animal sculptor, painter, engraver on medals and ceramist, he was born in ajaccio in 1865 and died in montigny sur loing in 1946. At a very young age, he moved to lorraine, the cradle of his family, when his father died prematurely.he entered the ecole des beaux arts in nancy in 1883 and became friends with jacques grüber, mathias schiff, louis majorelle, emile friant. In 1885, he was admitted to the school of decorative arts in paris. Charles virion will then be a student of charles gauthier and jean-paul aubé at the ecole des beaux-arts in paris. After learning artistic earthenware in choisy-le-roi, charles virion settled in 1889 in montigny-sur-loing where he became a decorator, medalist, sculptor and animal painter. After the first world war, he created memorials to the dead of several municipalities including those of montigny-sur-loing, nemours, la genevraye and arbonne-la-forêt. Works by charles virion are held at the musée d'orsay in paris and at the jackson hole museum of fauna and flora art in wyoming in the united states.
