Andrea Müller (born 1955 in Heidelberg) studied ceramics and sculpture in Wiesbaden from 1971 to 1976 and has worked independently in Aschaffenburg since 1980. Since 1990, she has exhibited across Europe and the United States. Her awards include the Danner Honorary Prize (1993), first prize at the Creußen Ceramics Competition (2001), and the Bavarian State Prize (2006). Her work belongs to collections including the Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin, the Badisches Landesmuseum Karlsruhe, Veste Coburg, and Die Neue Sammlung in Munich. Smoke firing defines an important part of her practice. After bisque firing, unglazed vessels spend four to five days over an open fire in an almost oxygen-free environment. Carbon penetrates the material, creating subtle tonal gradations; polished porcelain develops a satin sheen with an almost horn-like appearance. The vessels offered here combine these surfaces with rigorously structured forms. Throwing marks and transitioning shades of cream, gray, brown, and black create depth while preserving formal serenity. This tension between discipline and spontaneity characterizes Müller's approach. Her ceramics sit naturally within contemporary interiors, where earth tones, natural materials, and handcrafted surfaces remain prominent. These qualities arise directly from material, form, and fire. Their aesthetic feels current without having been created for the present moment. As artworks or carefully placed interior objects, the vessels possess a timeless presence.
