Charming pair of 19th century square-based candlesticks with polychrome decoration of flowers, scrolls, lambrequins and trellises made by the fourmaintraux brothers' factory in desvres. These authentic candlesticks were produced and hand-painted by jules and emile fourmaintraux between 1879 and 1889 (see history of the desvres earthenware factories below) as evidenced by the signatures affixed to each of them. These two candlesticks have slightly different decorations but form a beautiful pair. 19th century piece in good general condition in place with their age and authenticity. Heirs of a great line of earthenware makers since gilbert, a potter in lille, born in 1675. In 1804 françois-joseph fourmaintraux, a former worker at sta, founded an earthenware dynasty that would split into three factories including the "fourmaintraux-hornoy" factory then "fourmaintraux frères" in 1879, then jules fourmaintraux in 1887. In 1887, after eight years of collaboration with jules, emile fourmaintraux withdrew from the fourmaintraux frères business. Jules then imposed a non-competition clause on him that prohibited him from making earthenware. However, emile set up a workshop at the back of his house, located in la poterie.
