Thus vitra embarked, in 1963, in the development of one of the most emblematic and famous chairs of the twentieth century. This challenge proved almost impossible to meet, as the bold shapes imagined by the designer had to be reconciled with the physical limits of plastics technology and the requirements of production techniques. Years of intensive research, testing, development and abandonment of prototypes ensued. The final shape of the chair is finally elaborated through a series of ten prototypes in polyester reinforced with fiberglass, laminated by hand. Verner panton and the vitra developers stubbornly pursue and persist in their idea, working even in the evenings and on weekends.
