Ancient Chinese wooden basket with iron bands, square base and smooth sides, reinforced on the edges and corners by oxidised forged iron bands and equipped with a twisted iron handle on one side. Originating from China, from the end of the Qing dynasty, this type of container — called dou (斗) — served as a standard measure of grain in rural markets and granaries in the north. Grain measures were part of the common equipment for Chinese agricultural trade until the early 20th century. The examples with iron bands were designed for intensive use in outdoor markets: the metal reinforcement protected the edges from the repeated impact of the ladle and the corners from wear under load. The deep rust on the fittings documents decades of exposure and continuous handling. It is constructed from solid wood, with boards joined using visible dovetail joints at the four corners. The bands run from top to bottom, secured with square-headed forged nails, and extend into folded feet at the base. The side handle, made of twisted iron, retains its original anchorage and allows the basket to be carried with one hand. Details. Dimensions: Length 28.5 cm – Depth 28 cm – Height 17 cm. Style: Qing Dynasty. Materials and techniques: Solid wood with forged iron bands and handle; visible dovetail joint assembly; square-headed forged nails. Place of origin: China. Period: Qing Dynasty (1644–1912) Date of manufacture: Circa 1900. Condition / Observations: Good. Intense patina. Wear consistent with age and use.
