Overview: Early Biedermeier chest (Austria, dated 1815) in a restrained, low-profile form. Prominent book-matched walnut veneer surface with contrasting cherry-veneered interior panels. Materials: Figured walnut veneer over a softwood carcass; cherry counter-veneering on the inner doors and drawer fittings. Original brass fittings and applied gold-leaf gilding on the cornice and decorative mouldings. Features: Two lower doors and two drawers, the upper drawer fitted with a sliding cherry board and interior fittings. Original locks, large wrought-iron latches and ebonized pilaster columns with gilt sphinx caryatid details. Later removable interior insert for adaptable storage.
