Set of 6 vintage talking plates from the famous pottery of Gien, founded in 1821 in the Loire Valley. This is the "Friendship" series in black print on a white background, comprising 6 pieces. Stamped on the reverse: "The Friendship of a Great Man is a Blessing from the Gods." A true fashion phenomenon in the 19th century, the fine earthenware plates known as "talking" feature historical and legendary decorations. The subjects address military life, hunting, monuments, or the customs of urban and rural French society. Fables, rebuses, proverbs, and popular songs are also represented or inscribed on these often satirical or caricatured pieces. The talking plates were ornamental or used as dessert dishes.
