Coffee table “BELARTI”, circa 1960/70. Top in glazed ceramic. Resting on a chrome metal base. Signature present on the top. Signs of rust on the base. Dimensions: H 38.5 L 91 D 46.5 cm. It is worth noting a mystery surrounding the name Belarti; some believe that behind this name lies Julien de Covemaeker (a Belgian ceramist born in 1927, who passed away in 2008), who may have chosen Belarti by contracting the words BELgian and ARTists, while others attribute this signature to a collective of talented Belgian ceramic artists. It is said that the “J” is for Julien, but even more often that he fancifully chose “Juliette”… You can therefore find numerous listings referring to pieces by “Juliette Belarti”. Juliette Belarti, although real in her creations, remains a mystery. And this mystery adds an intriguing dimension to a very recognisable production. Indeed, Juliette Belarti has no civil existence. However, her coffee tables, far from being mere furniture, are the expression of an era, the 60s/70s, and its unique aesthetic. They quickly became iconic of the production of that time. The coffee tables of Juliette Belarti stand out for their originality and elegance. Each of these functional pieces tells a visual story, captures the essence of the abstract, and invites the observer. The table becomes a focal point, drawing the eye and stimulating the imagination. Whether Juliette Belarti is a person or an artistic entity, the impact of her creations endures and invites future generations to keep track of them.
