Magnificent wool ghoum, time of the shah, mid-20th century iran wool velvet on silk foundation. Density: 5000/7000 knots per dm2 approximately. Carpet decorated with floral vase on black, navy, beige and gold background. Floral border on ultra navy blue background. Some 150 kilometers south of tehran, near a dry river, is the city of ghoum (or qom). In ghoum, the manufacture of carpets began at the beginning of the tenth century. Tapestry is to ghoum what painting is to versailles. Ghoum carpets are distinguished by their fine workmanship and wool or silk velvet. They are often tied tightly, with the persian knot, and have figurative motifs to the drawings of animals and plants or gardens (as is the case for this one). These are carpets entirely handmade and require hours and days of continuous work.
