Koliai rugs, sometimes called Songhur rugs, take their name from the Koliai tribes, who originate from Koliai and surrounding villages in the Sonqor region of western Iran. These people, known for their rug weaving skills, are part of Iran's Kurdish minority. Historically, these rugs were woven to meet everyday needs: floor mats, blankets, saddle pads, etc. But their spectacular and aesthetic designs made them famous, so much so that they became coveted commodities. While initially Koliai rugs were made entirely of wool, today cotton warp yarn is most often used in their manufacture.
