Jorge Zalszupin, the Brazilian master of jacaranda

Jorge Zalszupin (1922-2020) is one of the greatest Brazilian designers of the 20th century. A Polish architect who emigrated to Brazil after the war, he founded L'Atelier in São Paulo in 1959, a manufactory specialising in precious wood furniture: jacaranda (Rio rosewood), pau ferro, freijó. His Presidencial and Paulistana armchairs, Petalas tables and sculpted bookshelves have become icons of modern Brazilian design, at the crossroads of European modernism and the plastic richness of tropical woods. A body of work globally rediscovered over the past twenty years.

The Presidencial armchair and Petalas table in jacaranda from L'Atelier remain Jorge Zalszupin's most iconic pieces. Brazilian vintage furniture to find for those wanting a modern South American signature, in precious wood with a rare patina.
