Maria Pergay, Parisian polished steel
Maria Pergay (1930-2023) is a French designer of Moldovan origin whose signature in polished stainless steel transformed French luxury furniture in the 1960s and 70s. Trained at the Sorbonne, she began by designing jewellery for Hermès, then turned in 1957 to furniture. Her Daybed Tapis Volant (1968), entirely in polished steel, became one of the most iconic pieces of French signature design. Her steel-polished chests, tables and seats, sometimes adorned with precious wood or leather, equipped Parisian mansions and Saudi palaces.
