Alfred Hendrickx, the Belgian modernist of Belform
Alfred Hendrickx (1931-2016) is one of the greatest 20th-century Belgian designers. Trained at the Institute of Decorative Arts in Antwerp, he became in 1955 the chief designer of Belform, one of the main publishers of modern furniture in Belgium. For three decades, he signed there a production of chairs, armchairs, sofas, sideboards and storage systems where Scandinavian influence met Belgian inventiveness. His S3 chair (1958), 8418 armchair and Madison sofa remain the most identifiable pieces of a coherent body of work recognised throughout Northern Europe.
The S3 chair, 8418 armchair and Madison sofa from Belform remain Alfred Hendrickx's signature pieces. Belgian vintage furniture to find for those wanting a Flemish modernist signature, still very accessible vs Danish designers.
