Peter Ghyczy, the garden egg chair

Peter Ghyczy (born 1940) is an Austro-Hungarian designer based in Germany, whose work embodies the audacity of Seventies plastic design. A graduate in architecture from Aachen, he ran the design department of Elastogran in the 1960s, then founded his own manufactory in 1972. His iconic piece remains the Garden Egg (1968): a fibreglass-reinforced polyester shell armchair, designed for indoor and outdoor use, whose lid closes to protect the seat from rain. A Space Age piece now cult.

The Garden Egg armchair remains Peter Ghyczy's signature piece. A vintage garden chair to find for those wanting a classic of German pop design, at the crossroads of outdoor furniture and sculptural object.
