Marcel Gascoin, designer of the Reconstruction
Marcel Gascoin (1907-1986) is one of the founding figures of French social design. An interior architect trained at the École Boulle, he actively participated in the reconstruction of France after 1945 and founded in 1949 the ARHEC agency (Rational Planning of Housing and Communities), which equipped social housing in Le Havre, Boulogne-Billancourt and workers' estates. His credo? Beautiful furniture for all. Desks, beds, chairs, shelves: his sober, functional and right production shaped the daily life of a million French households.
Marcel Gascoin desks, shelves and chairs, often in solid oak or ash, remain the designer's most recognised pieces. French vintage furniture from the Reconstruction to find for those wanting a piece of social history of modern design.
