Alvar Aalto, the soul of Finnish design

Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) is, along with Eliel Saarinen, the father of modern Finnish design. A total architect, he founded in 1935 with his wife Aino the Artek publisher, still active today, and developed there an original vision of modernism: heat-bent light wood replaces the Bauhaus tubular steel, organic curves nuance the right angle, Nordic light infuses every piece. The Stool 60 (1933), Paimio chair (1932), A331 Beehive lamp and Savoy vase (1936) have become the global standards of Scandinavian modernism.

The Stool 60, Paimio chair and Savoy vase edited by Artek remain Alvar Aalto's most iconic pieces. Scandinavian vintage furniture to find for those wanting a Finnish design classic, now a global standard of Nordic modernism.
