Very rare earthenware dessert plate from jemmappes period j.b cappelmans w smith & cie so from before 1870. Very old so and in good condition except for a slight crack and a small shine (to see on the photo). The décor is blue around the plate and the central black motif depicts a view of the governor's cottage in mumbai. Plate diameter 21 cm. If you want to know more about jemmappes earthenware: The first jemappienne earthenware factory was managed by the company fauwel, willems and picard elder from august 6, 1838 until its merger with a larger company: cappellemans, smith, willems et cie. Cappellemans, smith, willems et cie period (1847-1870): the sons of the brussels industrialist jean-baptiste cappellemans create a general partnership whose deed is signed in brussels on 6 august 1847. Their goal is to make fine earthenware, sometimes called opaque porcelain. This kind of earthenware was a great success at the time. The partners are as follows: Jean baptiste cappellemans, the eldest son, and his brothers working in community in brussels (place du samedi) William smith elder and others, trading in partnership in stockton-on-tees (england) -eugene willems, financier, and others, domiciled in jemappes. Smith had been operating a pottery in yorkshire for twenty years and j.b. Cappellemans had formed a partnership in 1846 with arnold and daboust in the management of the estroppe porcelain factory (near hal). The company's registered office is in jemappes and operates under the name "j.b. Cappellemans, w. Smith, e. Willems et cie". The factory began its activity in june 1847. Its purpose is "the manufacture in belgium of english earthenware and the sale of manufactured products".
