Medieval tapestry the sweet heart the offering of the heart the gift of the heart

This tapestry dates from the middle of the twentieth century. It is of beautiful quality. It has a label on the back "the sweet heart". Title: the offering of the heart. Other title: the gift of the heart. This tapestry illustrates one of the most frequent themes of courtly iconography: the gift of the heart. In the middle of a stylized vegetal decoration, a woman sits, carrying a falcon on her gloved left hand. It is not a hunting scene but a conventional representation emphasizing the belonging to the aristocratic milieu. A man walks towards her offering her a small heart: a poetic metaphor evoking a declaration of love that marks the beginning of a life full of adventures and exploits. We find "the gift of the heart" in courtly novels such as the roman de la rose. The characters are dressed in the fashion of the fifteenth century, with large coats lined with ermine. The man wears a tight and short purple, showing his legs dressed in socks of two different colors. It is shod with fashionable foals since the end of the fourteenth century. The lady is dressed in a wide dress, with a high waist. On either side of her bulging forehead, which is largely clear, her hair protrudes from a headdress adorned with pearls. Copy of the tapestry preserved in the louvre museum, which dates from the early fifteenth century (1400-1410), woven in arras, it has retained a perfect freshness of color and describes an emblematic scene of courtly love. The tapestry is in a good state of conservation, we report some friction and wear, no hole or tear, small deformations on the edges, scratches and lack of stucco on the ends of the bar.
