Oak Community Chest – Late 19th Century

This solid oak community chest has a lid mounted on iron hinges and held open by a so-called knee compass. The majority of community chests which contained money, gold, jewelry, documents or any other precious object were locked using three separate locks which required the simultaneous presence of three people, each custodian of 'a key.
