This large stoneware oiler is an object of the past that is part of the long tradition of the craftsmen of the land. It is part of the alsatian productions that were found in all homes, such as lard pots, sauerkraut or other pitchers, jugs and chopes. Legend has it that johann spitz, a german potter, landed by chance in betschdorf in 1717, with a cart of ceramic pots, after having an accident and breaking a wheel. The locals welcomed him so warmly that he decided to stay in this city where he invented the technique of cooking stoneware terracotta with salt to preserve food. In betschdorf, the production of sandstone pottery employed 400 people at the beginning of the twentieth century in about sixty workshops. Today, there are only 4 left... With its beautiful silhouette and its abstract decoration of an intense blue, made using cobalt acid that withstands the high temperatures imposed by the stoneware, this large oilmaker will find its place in a country style kitchen. It can also be diverted into a vase. It is in very good condition. Height: 35 cm. Diameter: 25 cm. Weight: 2.6 kg.
