Lot of 3 large old japanese kokeshi dolls in beautiful condition. The first measures 54 cm with a head diameter of 15 cm. The second measures 37 cm with a head diameter of 10 cm. The third measures 30 cm with a head diameter of 6.5 cm. Great decoration on a piece of furniture or on the floor with large models like these. Colissimo shipping included in the price. Kokeshi were created by kiji-shi (wood craftsmen) in northern honshū (japan's largest island), in the tōhoku region, at the end of the edo era. At the beginning of their creation, these dolls representing little girls were small toys for children, before being sold as souvenirs for tourists. Their production then diversified in terms of size, shape and decoration. In the past, there were several words to designate japanese dolls, depending on their place of production (kogesu, kiboko, deko, etc.). At a meeting of artisans and collectors held in 1940, it was decided that the word kokeshi (こけし?), written in hiragana, would henceforth serve as the standard name1.
