Oil painting on panel "young italian mountaineer" by emile verbrugge (1856-1936). Emile verbrugge is an artist quite well rated with the guide akoun. He was a son of pieter verbrugge and mathilde fockenié. He began his studies under the direction of eduard wallays and bruno van hollebeke at the academy of fine arts in bruges, where he had flori van acker as a fellow student. Later he went to the art academies of antwerp and brussels, where he had karel verlat and jan frans portaels as masters of studies. His paintings mainly showed domestic scenes and animals. He was known as a great amateur and painter of birds and other animals. His subjects were very varied. In addition to the many paintings he made during his stays abroad, he painted many portraits, still lifes, landscapes, etc. After winning a second prize in 1880 with his painting the gauls defeated the romans, he won the prix de rome in 1883 with his imposed theme painting the resurrection of lazarus. Following the tradition of the time and thanks to the scholarship associated with the prix de rome, he traveled for three years in italy, tyrol, north africa and egypt. On his grave is the following text in large letters: here lies a sage. A true artist, he lived only for his art, in solitude and simplicity. Work, kindness, righteousness and wisdom followed his whole life. Alas: why did he have to suffer the injustice of menǃ what this injustice really was is still unknown. His paintings are part of the collections of the groeninge museum, the provincial government of namur and the gaspar-collection museum of the archaeological institute of luxembourg. His works, which are in the groeninge museum (self-portrait, italian ploughman, arab girl, werkossen), were donated in 1950 by his widow. Our little italian mountaineer in his pretty golden frame is touching sincerity.
