Théophile gautier. The twelve months. Last work of gavarni. 1869 - rare first edition. Paris: aug. Marc et cie [1869] Collection composed of 12 plates illustrating the months of the year, accompanied by a text by théophile gautier. Good general condition. Freckles for a book that is 153 years old. No torn page. 1 volume in folio in full blue canvas, paginated, tellière format: 34 X 44 cm. Rare original edition. On november 24, 1866, paul gavarni died of a heart attack. In addition to the various commissioned compositions he had in progress at the time of his death, gavarni was working on "the twelve months", a project of which he had already fixed the first idea by a sketch and which it was enhanced according to his whim. Almost three years after the artist's death, the illustration, who had this series of figures transported and engraved on wood, had this unfinished work printed, respecting the state in which each drawing was located. Gavarni will not look in the mythology of the gods for allegorical characters or goddesses to represent the twelve months of our republican calendar. These figures have a construction safety that does not require any of the usual legends of gavarni. #1870. #19e century. Graphics #arts. #estampe. #lithographie. #romantisme.
