Modular brutalist coffee table PAUL KINGMA, copper stone & brass, adjustable system 1970s

Brutalist style modular system coffee table, designed by dutch artist paul kingma in the 1970s. The artist used a variety of materials that he collected throughout his life and travels, such as coins and various pieces of metal and bronze included in natural stone mosaics including schist. The table rests on a rectangular schist base. The tablet is adjustable in height from 48cm to 64cm (see photos), it is also removable for easy transport. Born in the hague in 1931, kingma studied art in arnhem before training at the rijksakademie [academy of fine arts] in amsterdam and the royal academy of arts in london. During his career he was commissioned to create a number of sculptures for public spaces in dutch cities such as utrecht, eindhoven and amersfoort. However, it was in the art of mosaic that he established his reputation, unique stones in his table tops, later incorporating fossils and petrified wood, reminiscent of the work of certain artists such as ado chale. In addition to her furniture design, kingma has also taught sculpture and mosaics at the institute of visual arts in amersfoort, netherlands.
