A set of four handmade, original japanese happiness dolls - kokeshi. The dolls are signed and come from the 1960s. Traditional japanese kokeshi dolls come from the tohoku region in northern japan. Handmade wooden kokeshi symbolize youth and girlish beauty; they are customarily given as a gift as amulets of love and friendship, also on the occasion of birth; it is believed that they are favored by the gods. The classic form of the kokeshi doll consists of a simple, cylindrical body devoid of limbs and a head with delicate, painted lines emphasizing the features of the doll's face.
