Leather armchair from the Giovanni Offredi years, Saporiti, 1970/80, Italy

Giovanni offerdi. Italian, 1927-2007. About his mid-century modern furniture designs, which combine minimalist simplicity, elegance and symmetry, Italian designer giovanni offredi once said: "beauty should not be confused with appearance, for the latter is the superficial part of the form". Born in milan in 1927, offredi did not train as an architect, unlike many of his contemporaries in the first half of the 20th century. He also began designing furniture later in his career. His first known pieces of furniture were commissioned by wealthy Milanese families in 1960. It was not until the late 1960s—when Offredi met Sergio Saporiti, owner of the Italian furniture manufacturer and design store Saporiti—that his furniture designs became more prominent. In 1970, Offredi partnered with Saporiti and produced several lines of innovative, modernist furniture. Some of Offredi’s most notable pieces include the softly curved Wave chair, sofa, and chaise longue; the Onda coffee table; and the Paracarro dining table, with its cylindrical concrete base, glass, and metal section. He also designed a series of lacquered wood sideboards and buffets, with a glossy finish and bold colors. Offredi maintained a fruitful collaboration with Saporiti throughout the 1970s.
