Henri goetz (1909–1989) Color lithography. Abstract composition. Signed lower right and titled passage i/iv lower left. Modern frame and under glass. Very good condition, tiny freckles. Dimensions with frame: 45x48cm. Dimensions at sight: 28x31, 5cm. *biography. 1909 henri goetz is born in new york to an american family of french origin. 1930 after studying at m.i.t. And harvard university, cambridge, parallel to a private teaching of painting and drawing, studies at the grand central art school in new york. He left the united states for the france. In paris, he attended the académie julian, the workshops of montparnasse, including the ozenfant workshop. He devoted himself mainly to portrait painting, in a fairly realistic style. 1934 meeting with victor bauer who introduces him to surrealist painting. His art is influenced by expressionism, fauvism and cubism. 1935 definitively established in france, goetz marries christine boumeester, a painter he meets at the grande chaumière. He discovers the painting of picasso, klee. Early non-figurative paintings. He became friends with hans hartung, who introduced him to the circle of avant-garde painters; this is how goetz met leger and kandinsky. 1936 now not figurative, but with a surrealist spirit. Exhibits at the salon des surindépendants. 1937 first private exhibition at the bonaparte gallery (van leer), rue bonaparte in paris, with christine boumeester. Befriends gonzales, fernandez, domela, vulliamy, vieira da silva, schneider, dominguez, szenes, arp, kandinsky, van tongerloo. 1938 meets andré breton and the surrealists; henri goetz paints the "corrected masterpieces" so named by andré breton executed with tempera and egg painting on photographic reproductions of works of masters, in a kind of posthumous collaboration with them. Goetz and his wife hosted hans hartung in their home. 1939 years of war.
