Chawan cup in raku made by hand (without tools) for the tea ceremony. After a first firing, the piece is enameled then annealed more quickly. When it comes out of the oven, the piece is enclosed in a basin containing paper, bark or even sawdust to complete its cooking. This cooking method makes each piece unique. Historically, raku pottery appeared in japan around the 16th century. It is linked with the “wabi” aesthetic which advocates the beauty of imperfection.
