"the first corkscrew dates back to the late 18th century, but the golden age of the corkscrew was in the middle of the 19th century, the heyday of british industry and inventions. In those days, visionaries competed to file their patents for inventions of all kinds, including the corkscrew. The first patent was granted to samuel henshall in 1795. From then until the beginning of the 20th century, more than 300 patents were registered for corkscrews, which underlines their progress. It is these corkscrews that collectors around the world, lovers of old corkscrews" (thanks to jean-pierre, collector whose site I can not quote here but who gives valuable information).
