Original drawing in black chalk by Jean Villette (1913-2005)

I am selling this beautiful original drawing on canson paper signed jean villette (1913-2005), artist and historian from chartres, specialist in chartres and its cathedral, to which he devoted numerous works. This black stone drawing represents the moat of the château de tardais (in senonches, in perche), as evidenced by the handwritten mention by the artist on the reverse. The artist depicts with a lively and confident line the walls which make up the ditches, whose grassy background is punctuated by the imposing shadows of the building. The original composition is characterized by a vanishing point which opens on the right onto a landscape of trees. We observe a beautiful mastery of shadow and light, with deep nuances in the dark areas, characteristic of black stone. On the back, a red sticker inscribed “11” testifies to the probable exhibition of this drawing during the artist's lifetime: this drawing was acquired as a lot during an auction in chartres in september 2023 during the dispersal of the jean villette collection; the twenty other drawings, charcoals or lithographs which made up the lot also have stickers on the back, or even annotations in the artist's hand. I kept some of them, i'm getting rid of the others because I don't have enough walls to hang them all! Very good condition: no tears or defects to report.
