Kadjar lacquered papier-mâché box

Beautiful lacquered papier-mâché box decorated with imaginary animals (which look like cats) and plant motifs. The box appears to take the form of a vegetable or cucurbit/calabash. The papier-mâché (or boiled cardboard) is painted black (with dark blue highlights) and the motifs are engraved and enhanced with paint (gold, green, white). Iran, kadjar art, circa 1900.
