Description
Earthenware plate with a nice bird decoration. Without certainty, this earthenware recalls the earthenware of nevres. We can note 3 cracks on the edge of the plate, and some scratches of use. On the bottom it is written "te" This pretty plate remains quite honorable and very nicely made. Nevers earthenware is a ceramic production of the Nevers region which knows a strong development from the end of the sixteenth century. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the earthenware of Nevers is at its peak. Competing with English earthenware and porcelain, it then experienced a sharp decline before being revived at the end of the nineteenth century. One of the characteristics of nevers earthenware is a glazed decoration at the same time as the enamel of the support, which excludes retouching. If the first pieces are made in an Italian style, the decorations evolve during the seventeenth century, borrowing not only from the French tradition but also from Flemish, Persian and Chinese iconography. In the eighteenth century, earthenware became more popular with a production of patronymic pieces then, under the revolution, patriotic earthenware.
