Double stamp: nicolas petit (1732-1791 master on january 21, 1761) and jean soltzer (master on june 17, 1778 and died in 1783) Louis XVI period, circa 1783. Our dresser bears the stamp of nicolas petit, master in 1761. This cabinetmaker was active for nearly 30 years and declined all styles, from louis XV to louis XVI through the transition style. He had a great reputation during his lifetime with very refined furniture present in the greatest museums such as the carnavalet museum, and the museum of decorative arts in lyon, the nissim museum in camondo, the lambinet museum in versailles, the cognacq-jay museum, the wallace collection. Our dresser is obviously from the last production phase of nicolas petit, simple and classic décor, as always tasteful and carefully crafted. It is typical of the "entry-level" manufacture of a large cabinetmaker that differs from the current production by qualitative details: the facades are solid mahogany that has been disbursed in the mass, rather than the economic mode where mahogany chopsticks are brought back overlay. It's discreet, but it's proof of high quality: the luxury material that is mahogany has not been rationed. The bronzes are also finely chiseled, the white marble carved in the cellar and with a stall at the back, also qualitative details that change from the current production. The stamp of jean soltzer (master on 17 june 1778, died in 1783) is quite rare because this cabinetmaker had a short career and therefore did not give rise to abundant production. His widow kept his studio until the revolution.
