Description
4 Vintage Black "40/4" Chairs by David Rowland for Howe in excellent condition. The 40/4 chair, with its contemporary and industrial design, shines as an undisputed icon of the 20th century, proudly enthroned in the world's greatest museums, from the Museum of Modern Art in New York to the Museu de Arte Moderna in Rio de Janeiro, among others. by the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris. But this resounding triumph was not achieved without resistance. On the contrary, its extraordinary journey has been shaped by the tenacity and determination of its creator. While he was exploring the trails of Europe, a daring idea germinated within him: to create chairs that were both functional and unrivaled in comfort. He presented his first sketches to Knoll Associates, one of the few "modern" chair makers of his time. Unfortunately, his project was initially rejected many times, but he persevered with admirable insight. This is how the stackable chair of 40 units was born. Multiple prototypes were carefully crafted until perfection was achieved. Finally, he presented his masterpiece to Knoll Associates, who, vacillating between hesitation and enthusiasm, ultimately abandoned the project. However, the tireless innovator did not give up, and it was ultimately the General Fireproofing Company of Youngstown that raised the standard of production. The story of this chair, so revered today, is an epic story of stubbornness and determination.
