Art•deco. Description  Art deco mahogany bookcase lamp attributed to andré sornay. Restored in the workshops of light & night by bertin verstraete.  André sornay was born in lyon. In 1920, on the death of his father, andré sornay was 17 years old and abandoned his studies at the beaux-arts where he studied decoration and architecture, to take over the family business of style furniture. He immediately created his own models while keeping the know-how of the local craftsmen employed by his father. Ignoring the world of cabinetmaking, he used his knowledge as a draftsman and his taste for architecture. He completely abandons the ornament and the curve to favor the line and the balance of the volumes. The young lyon clientele in demand for modernity is an opportunity for him. In 1922, he exhibited for the first time at the foire de lyon. From then on, he simplified lines and volumes, without abandoning the traditional heritage of cabinetmaking. He is very noticed, praised by some and criticized by others.  In 1925, he opened his own studio in lyon and exhibited in paris, at the international exhibition of decorative arts. He is a key player in this new historical period called art deco. He develops custom-made and multifunctional furniture, with a view to constantly seeking technical solutions and setting up the furniture. In 1928, andré sornay introduced color and used duco lacquer. It is a cellulosic paint easily applicable to the spray gun and used in the automotive industry. In 1932, he invented "nailing", a technical plating process that generated an aesthetic effect. In 1934, he introduced oregon pine to his productions (such as legrain and eileen gray).
