Description
Period: ca. Late 19th century. This empire style butter dish (or jam maker) is typical of the eclectic style of the napoleon iii/victorian era of the late 19th century. The metal support and lid are decorated with neoclassical motifs such as a frieze of lictor's beam, a frieze of pearls and several garlands of flowers. The coffin-shaped lid is adorned with an imposing acorn-shaped fretel. Two prominent handles stand out from the short sides. The silver-gray base metal has been blackened. The removable container is made of thick ribbed crystal (or glass); it is certainly original to the piece (however it must be carefully placed in the corners of the support so that it does not come off). Status: good. The black layer was refreshed because it had thinned a lot; this was done with chinese ink. The line seen in the photo on the base of the container is not a crack; it is a line in the glass resulting from the glass casting process. Dimensions: 22 cm long with handles, 12 cm wide, 11 cm high, 0.790 kg.
