French majolica rooster “chantecler” water pitcher. Circa 1900. Produced by keller and guerin saint clement, france. Original older model. Good condition, no chips. Rich in colourisation and glaze. A great way to decorate any table. H 39 cm. W 12, 5 cm. D 22 cm. The history of st. Clément pottery is a long one, dating back to the mid 1700s when it was established by jacques chambrette, producing traditional french faience. St. Clément became a favoured supplier for marie antoinette. St. Clément majolica is characterized by the subtle shadings of colours. The majolica pieces include a series of figural jugs or absinthe pitchers in the form of a duck with folded wings, a rooster, or a parrot. Also other animals can be found, like a pig, rabbit, cat, monkey or poodle, but are more rare. Old pitchers mostly have 3-digit numbers while newer productions carry 4-digit numbers. They were mostly produced in the 1920s and 1930s. They are all truly lovely historic pieces of fabulous st. Clément pottery.
