Unique and personalized set of 3 wall panels and 2 brutalist cabinets by the Italian sculptor Stefano d'Amico in beech and brass, signed and dated, 1974. Not much is known about D'Amico's work, except that he organized exhibitions in Milan and Genoa in the late 1960s and that he was a sculptor, born in Sicily. We found him in a book and his other works are also interesting and have a certain resemblance to this work. These particular cabinets were custom-made for a home in Venice, where they come from. This set of cabinets and wall panels has been made with great care and precision: the small beech cubes are perfectly straight and the strips have all been fixed separately with a single nail (or two) and a little glue to the large motherboard. Together they create a spectacle for the eye, with plenty to see for those who love this kind of brutalist and literally cubist style surface patterns. It is almost impossible to discover some kind of recurring pattern or systematic order in these works of art, because there is no system in the positioning of the cubes, which can be a little tight, (but can be very pleasant at times). In a way, it looks a lot like the landscaping of big cities with huge building blocks and railways or rivers, giving them a brutal touch (without the concrete). In the evening, when it's darker and the cabinet is in the limelight, you'll be amazed at what the city's structure can do with shadows. It's very playful and it just gives them a little extra. Light wood reflects light very well by creating lighter and darker spaces over the entire surface, which makes the shadow corridors a little dark too. These cabinets have interesting features, such as darker-colored bands that run all the way between two lighter stripes. The bottom of the sideboard is entirely covered with brass. D'Amico has chosen its different brown colors in a very pleasant way considering the overall look of this piece with darker brown on the sides and top and lighter brown on the front panels. If you open the sideboard, a pleasant smell of fresh wood greets you and you can see directly that the inner part has also been cared for with beautiful flames in the wood and made with great attention to detail, such as the closing mechanism and the golden hinges that still work very well almost 50 years after these pieces were made. It certainly cost him a lot of time and effort to put all this in place. Stefano d'Amico was therefore a man who had a lot of patience and perseverance. The panels are quite large with their two meters in height (or width). In fact, all panels have two handles on the back to hang them, but these are placed in such a way that you can only hang them horizontally at the moment. Many combinations are possible, of course, so you can adjust them as you wish. This set is ideal for filling a large space and creating fresh wood tones in interesting shapes (and excellent acoustics!).
