Indeed, alfredo's grandfather on his father's side, gil carmelo, was married to magdalena lakandula, a relative of raja lakandula. His grandfather on his mother's side, pedro casas, was the only son of ambrosio casas, (colonel and knighted for the beautiful statue he created for the king of spain). Alfredo carmelo was an exceptional personality. He was notably the first filipino aviator to fly alone and without assistance. This feat, achieved in 1920, made him one of the pioneers of aviation in the world. He specialized in aerobatics and subsequently participated in many air shows. Carmelo was eventually inducted into the aerospace hall of fame in san diego, california. As impressive as his exploits in aviation are, it is as a naval painter that his name remains etched in history. While other more illustrious filipino painters were only occasionally interested in the sea as a subject, carmelo specialized in this field. No other filipino painter has done a job of being so demanding of historical perspective, the same attention to detail.
